A Brief History
Essential oils have long been known for being a natural source of health, healing, longevity, and vitality. Evidence shows that the earliest usage of essential oils occurred sometime between 3000 and 2500 BC. Egyptians are credited with being the first culture to employ essential oils for beauty, cooking, spiritual rituals, and wellbeing. China and India were also societies credited with early use of essential oils for religious observances and ceremonies.
Historical records and cultural traditions provide understanding about how essential oils were used in the past and how effective they were. There is a renewed interest in essential oils because of their proven health benefits and efficacy.
How They Work
Commonly used in aromatherapy, essential oils are meant to be inhaled, not swallowed. They can also be applied topically or diffused. No matter how you choose to use them, they complex molecules in essential oils have a positive effect on the body.
The chemicals in essential oils interact with the body’s systems in many ways. When applied topically, the skin absorbs the oil and then carried throughout the body. Inhaling essential oils stimulate the limbic system; the part of the brain that controls emotions, behaviors, sense of smell and long term memory. Because the limbic system helps the formation of memories, it stands to reason that familiar smells trigger specific memories and emotions. The limbic system also controls breathing, heart rate, and blood pressure leading many practitioners of aromatherapy to claim that essential oils have a physical effect on the body.
